Some experiences of a soldier and engineer, 1890.

Reminiscences of William F. Goodhue, a Brodhead, Wisconsin native who served with Company C, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. The reminiscences provide much interest as Goodhue presented his account in book format with chapters, hand lettering, calligraphy, and ink drawings. He details the campaigns of Gettysburg, the Siege of Atlanta, Antietam, and the march from Atlanta to the Sea. These battle accounts include the appearance of the battlefield after the fighting has ended, feelings when faced with the death of a close friend, sounds when shells land nearby, and the conditions soldiers faced. Also included is an account of the literary activities of soldiers describing the method for trading books, using books to bargain for food, and the types of reading material which were most desired. This segment of Goodhue's account also includes information on other types of recreational activities. The collection also includes a segment on Abraham Lincoln, mentioning incidents like the review of the 11th and 12th Army Corps when Goodhue saw Abraham Lincoln, the popularity of Lincoln among soldiers, and his feelings about the election of 1864. The final account concerns his post-Civil War military service with his experiences as a member of a caravan exploring the west and his experiences and interactions with American Indians. Born in Massachusetts, Goodhue moved to Brodhead, Wisconsin sometime before the Civil War. He enlisted with Company C in 1861 at the age of seventeen. After the war, Goodhue worked as a civil engineer in both Racine and Milwaukee. He died in Wauwatosa in 1901
